Mount Buller is the closest serious alpine resort to Melbourne — about three hours by road — and it works as both a winter snow day and a summer mountain escape. What it does not do well is a self-drive trip in the snow season, when chains are mandatory, the final ascent is steep and switchbacked, and parking is limited and remote from the village.
A chauffeured transfer removes all of that. You are dropped at the village, collected when you are ready, and nobody spends twenty minutes fitting chains in the sleet.
The Snow Season
Buller’s season usually runs from the Queen’s Birthday long weekend in June through to late September, subject to conditions. Winter travel to any Victorian alpine resort carries requirements that catch out first-timers.
- Chains are mandatory. During the declared season all two-wheel-drive vehicles must carry chains, regardless of whether snow is falling. This is enforced.
- Resort entry is charged. A gate fee applies per vehicle per day and is paid at the entry station.
- The final climb is demanding. The road from Mirimbah to the village is steep, narrow and switchbacked, and conditions change quickly.
- Village parking is limited. Day visitors typically park below the village and take a shuttle. A drop-off avoids this entirely.
We carry and fit chains as required and the chauffeur is experienced in alpine conditions. You are set down at the village and collected at an agreed time.
Summer and Autumn
Outside the snow season the mountain is quiet and the road is straightforward. Mount Buller is a well-known mountain biking destination with lift-served trails, and there is walking through the alpine country around Mount Stirling and the Delatite River.
The drive itself is part of it — through Yea, Mansfield and the high country made familiar by The Man from Snowy River. Mansfield makes a good stop in either direction.

- Departure — early, usually 6:00am to 7:00am in winter to make the most of the day.
- Not included — resort entry, lift passes, equipment hire, lessons and meals.
- Luggage and gear — skis, boards and boots travel with you; tell us what you are bringing so we allocate the right vehicle.
- Weather — alpine conditions change fast and the road can close at short notice. We monitor forecasts and will contact you if a date looks unworkable.
- One-way transfers — available if you are staying on the mountain rather than returning the same day.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do we need snow chains?
During the declared snow season, generally June to September, all two-wheel-drive vehicles must carry chains to enter the resort. We carry and fit them as required, so it is not something you need to arrange.
Is resort entry included?
No. Mount Buller charges a resort entry fee per vehicle per day, paid at the gate, and it is not included in the tour price. Lift passes, hire and lessons are also separate.
Can you do a one-way transfer instead of a day trip?
Yes. One-way transfers to and from the mountain are available if you are staying overnight or for a full ski week.
Is Mount Buller worth visiting outside the snow season?
Yes. Summer and autumn bring lift-served mountain biking, alpine walking and a very quiet mountain, with none of the winter access requirements.
Is this a private tour or a shared group tour?
Every Prima tour is completely private. You travel only with your own party, in your own vehicle, with a dedicated chauffeur. There are no other passengers and no fixed schedule.
