The Grampians — Gariwerd to the Traditional Owners, the Jardwadjali and Djab Wurrung peoples — rise abruptly out of flat western Victoria as a series of sandstone ridges, and the change of scenery on the approach is startling. Waterfalls, kangaroos grazing on the edge of town, and lookouts that make the three-hour drive worth it.
It is the longest inland day trip we run from Melbourne, and it suits people who have already done the coast and want something different.
What the Day Includes
MacKenzie Falls
The most substantial waterfall in the park, running year round. The steep descent to the base is a genuine walk with a lot of steps; the Bluff lookout gives an excellent view for anyone who would rather not make the climb back.
Silverband Falls
A gentler alternative — a short, mostly level walk through forest to a quiet fall that most visitors miss entirely.
Halls Gap
The small township at the centre of the park, where kangaroos and emus graze openly on the recreation reserve at dawn and dusk. The usual lunch stop.
Lake Bellfield
A reservoir just south of Halls Gap with the ranges reflected in it — a short stop, and one of the better photographs of the day.
The Grand Canyon and Wonderland
Sandstone formations and lookouts over the Victoria Valley. The full Pinnacle walk is a demanding return hike; shorter sections give much of the view for a fraction of the effort.
Boroka and Reed Lookouts
Both are reachable by road with only a short walk, and both deliver enormous views across the valley and Halls Gap. The best option if walking is limited.

- Spring (Sep–Nov) — the best season. Wildflowers across the park and the waterfalls at full flow.
- Autumn (Mar–May) — settled, mild walking weather and comfortable temperatures.
- Winter (Jun–Aug) — strong waterfalls, moody light and very few people, but cold and often wet.
- Summer (Dec–Feb) — hot, and waterfall flow drops. Total fire ban days can close parts of the park.
On declared high fire danger days some roads and walking tracks close at short notice. We monitor conditions and will discuss alternatives with you rather than proceed into a closure.
Practical Details
- Departure — an early start, typically 6:30am to 7:00am, given the distance.
- Walking — the day can be built around anything from roadside lookouts to serious hikes. Tell us which.
- What to bring — proper walking shoes, water, sun protection and a warm layer; the ranges are cooler and windier than the plain.
- Meals — not included; Halls Gap has cafes and a bakery.

How far are the Grampians from Melbourne?
About 260 kilometres, or roughly three hours each way. It makes for a long day, typically twelve hours door to door, so an early departure is essential.
How hard is the walk to MacKenzie Falls?
The descent to the base is steep with many steps, and the climb back is the hard part. Allow an hour. The Bluff lookout is a short, easy walk and still gives an excellent view.
Will we see kangaroos?
Very likely. Kangaroos and emus graze openly around Halls Gap, and they are most active early in the morning and towards dusk.
