About Hunter Valley

The Hunter Valley sits in New South Wales, about 160 km (100 miles) north of Sydney. It's a fertile region of rolling hills, vineyards, and small heritage towns like Pokolbin, Cessnock, and Lovedale.

The valley is best known for two wine varietals:

Beyond wine, the region produces excellent boutique cheese, chocolate, olive oils, and craft beer โ€” making it a true food and wine destination.

Top Wineries to Visit

Tyrrell's Wines

One of Australia's oldest family-owned wineries (since 1858). The original ironbark slab hut still stands. Their Vat 1 Semillon is regarded as one of Australia's finest white wines.

Brokenwood

Famous for the Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz โ€” one of the most awarded wines in Australia. Their cellar door has a beautiful tasting room and on-site restaurant.

Audrey Wilkinson

Spectacular hilltop location with panoramic views of the valley. The historic homestead has been making wine since 1866. Premium tastings are exceptional.

Tulloch Wines

A 4th-generation family winery known for Shiraz and Semillon. Their warm hospitality and tasting flights are a highlight.

De Iuliis

A boutique family-owned cellar door with consistently excellent wines, especially their Single Vineyard Shiraz range.

Bimbadgen

Famous for hosting big-name concerts in summer. Beautiful grounds, fine dining at Esca Restaurant, and award-winning wines.

Beyond the Wineries

Hunter Valley Gardens

60 acres of themed gardens including the Italian Grotto, Storybook Garden, and Formal Garden. Particularly stunning during the Christmas Lights Spectacular and Tulip Time.

Hunter Valley Chocolate Company

Watch chocolate being made and sample dozens of varieties. The chocolate-dipped strawberries are unmissable.

Hunter Olive Centre

Cold-pressed olive oils, vinegars, and Mediterranean produce. Great for taking home gifts.

Smelly Cheese Shop

Boutique cheese boards, pairing recommendations, and a great place to grab a picnic lunch.

Iron Bark Hill Brewhouse

For non-wine drinkers (or a refreshing break) โ€” local craft beers and cider tastings.

When to Visit

Vintage Season (January-March)

The most exciting time. Harvest is underway, the vines are in full leaf, and there's a buzz at every winery. Some offer harvest tours.

Autumn (April-May)

The vines turn brilliant red and gold. The weather is mild and perfect for outdoor lunches. Less crowded than vintage time.

Spring (September-November)

Beautiful weather and the gardens are in full bloom. Tulip Time at Hunter Valley Gardens is in October.

Winter (June-August)

Quieter and atmospheric โ€” open fires, hearty meals, and intimate tastings. Many cellar doors are quiet, so you get more time with the winemakers.

Tips for a Great Wine Tour

  1. Eat a proper breakfast. You'll be tasting wine before noon.
  2. Drink water between tastings. Every winery offers water โ€” use it.
  3. You don't have to drink everything. Spit buckets are provided. Use them for early tastings to pace yourself.
  4. Book ahead at premium cellar doors. Some now require reservations.
  5. Plan only 4-5 wineries in a day. Quality over quantity. Each cellar door visit takes 30-45 minutes.
  6. Buy wines you love โ€” most ship to your hotel or directly to your home (including international shipping).
  7. Don't drive yourself. Police breath-test heavily in the region. A private driver is the standard way locals do wine tours.

Day Trip or Overnight?

Day Trip (9-11 hours total): Perfectly doable from Sydney. You'll visit 4-5 wineries, have a nice lunch, and be back at your hotel by evening. Best for short visits or first-timers.

Overnight Stay: If you have time, an overnight stay lets you enjoy a long dinner at one of the region's many excellent restaurants (Muse, Margan, Bistro Molines), see sunset over the vines, and get into the region's slower rhythm. There are beautiful boutique resorts, vineyard villas, and B&Bs.
